I’ll let you in on a secret. Or rather, I’ll tell you how Jesus lets us in on his secret. And the secret’s a big one. It’s about being included in the kingdom he’s bringing into being.

I’m not talking about something vague in the future. His kingdom is here and now (and future, too, when it will be complete). And it’s real.

But not everyone can see it. To understand the secret you have to be willing to see past all that ordinarily occupies our attention and look for love and truth and joy and meaning in a dimension that only Jesus can show us. To know it costs us all that we are. It cost Jesus his life to bring it to us. He called it the kingdom of God, or the kingdom of heaven. Once we discover it, it becomes a real part of our everyday, here-and-now world. And we realize that we have found a treasure.

Bulletin - August 14/11

Professor Annabel Robinson

The sermon title springs from the fact that next Tuesday has been designated as the day when we recognize these people. But who are they? And how do we decide which of them were holy?

One woman is particularly remembered for her faith. You will find her story in Joshua 2:1-21; 6:15-25. There will only be time to read part of this story in the service, but it will help if you have read the whole thing.  In the New Testament she is commended in Hebrews 11:31 and James 2:25. Why does she merit such praise? What does this tell us about what God wants of us?

What does the Old Testament have to say about how women should behave? the ideal wife? Is it the same as the New Testament teaching? Is there anything that is even more important than knowing what are our rights?

When people (or things) are set aside specifically for God’s use, they are, in a derivative sense, holy.

Church Calendar Background

The church has long had its own calendar – different form the civil calendar.  This is a useful reminder that our priority and values as followers of Jesus are different from society at large.  In the church’s calendar, August 15 is observed as the Feast Day of the Virgin Mary and August 16 has recently come to be observed as a feast day remembering and learning about Holy Women of the Old Testament. Further background information is available here.
